Google Voice on iPhone

Since many times Google have tried to get Apple to use the Google Voice application for iPhone. But for various reasons Apple has always negative response for Google. Anyways, Thanks to HTML5 Google have now launched Google Voice as a web app which allows Google Voice to be used on the iPhone (as well as the Palm Pre).

It works just like the web version used on a desktop PC and allows you to make calls, send text messages and listen to voice mail. Contacts can also be accessed from your phones browser.

Synchronisation is also possible that you can sync contacts from your Palm Pre or Apple iPhone with what you already have stored in your Google voice account.

It’s a smart move forwards for Google to do it this way although it would be nice to have Apple approve the app, but this will just have to do for now!

Nokia Software Updater for Windows 7

Last versions of the Nokia Software Updater came with a biggest issue that did not allow Non-Windows XP and Vista users to update the firmware on their computers. Nokia has taken a first step to resolve that issue by releasing a version of the NSU that supports Windows 7.

With many computers now shipping with Windows 7 preloaded, this move was of course expected. It was officially  announced by folks at Nokia Beta Labs who are calling it a release candidate. This obviously means that the final version will be expected in the months to come.

Along with Windows 7 support, the new version has added some features and boasts of improved USB connectivity. Nokia has confirmed that any critical improvements needed for this new version will only be included in the actual release, while smaller items will be fixed in coming releases. In the meantime, you might want to check the updater out on your new Windows 7 laden PC.

Man arrested because Twitter airport joke??

LONDON, right 1 day ago — A man was arrested by anti-terrorism police and suspended from his job after he sent a Twitter message joking that he was going to blow up an airport, a report said Monday.

When heavy snow at Robin Hood airport in Doncaster, northern England, threatened to ruin Paul Chambers’ plans to fly to Ireland, he vented his frustration by tapping out a message on the social networking site.

“Robin Hood airport is closed,” he wrote, according to The Independent newspaper. “You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!!”

A week after posting the message, Chambers was arrested under anti-terrorism laws at his office after police had apparently received a tip-off.

The 26-year-old was questioned for seven hours by officers who failed to see the joke in his message. He has been bailed to February 11 when he will find out if he will be charged with conspiring to create a bomb hoax.

He has also been suspended from work pending an internal investigation and banned from the airport for life.

Detectives have confiscated his iPhone, laptop and home computer.

“I would never have thought, in a thousand years, that any of this would have happened because of a Twitter post,” Chambers told The Independent. “I’m the most mild-mannered guy you could imagine.”

South Yorkshire police confirmed the arrest and said investigations were continuing.

Security has been stepped up at airports worldwide since a Nigerian student allegedly tried to detonate explosives concealed in his underwear on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on December 25.

A man appeared in court last week charged with making a bomb threat and being drunk on board an Emirates flight to Dubai as it sat on the runway at London’s Heathrow airport.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 Launch Date Postponed

In a very small announcement by Developer Division’s Marketing and Communications Manager Rob Caron, Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 is set to be officially launched April 12, 2010 and not March 22 as previously announced. However, the date for release to manufacturing (RTM) still remains unknown.

Historically, RTM for Visual Studio has been months ahead of the official launch. Visual Studio 2008 as an example was RTM November 19 2007, but officially launched February 27 2008, 3 months later.

Scott Guthrie reported late last year that Visual Studio 2010 is postponed because of performance issues found in Beta 2 and revealed plans for an intermediate release in February:

…we plan to make a Release Candidate build available in February that everyone will be able to download and test.  It will be a public build and include a broad “go live” license that supports production deployment.

Taking into account that the official release date is now April 12 and the RC is in February, the date difference between the official release and the RTM is probably much closer than for previous releases of Visual Studio.

Windows Mobile 7 Not Compatible With Existing Apps?

It seems that Eldar Murazin, the man behind Mobile-review.com, has managed to get his hands on Windows Mobile 7, and while that is certainly good news, there is also bad news accompanying it. According to him, Windows Mobile 7 won’t be compatible with existing apps, and that will probably mean that developers will need to adopt their apps to work on Windows Mobile 7, putting the OS at a significant disadvantage to begin with, as it will lose all its existing catalog of apps. Apparently this is still an early build of Windows Mobile 7, so maybe that might play a part in the existing apps not working. Aside from that, it seems that Windows Mobile 7’s UI is more complicated than that of the ZuneHD, featuring more horizontal movement and offers you more information by clicks. What do you think? Would it be good for Windows Mobile 7 to start with a clean slate?

Firefox a very Happy 5th Birthday

Originally an experimental branch of the Mozilla project, a new web browser was launched on November 9, 2004: Firefox 1.0. Its aim was to reduce Mozilla’s bloat (if you remember those early days, the Mozilla Suite consisted of a web browser, mail client, news reader, irc client; it even had a web page creator called Mozilla Composer), and it was an instant hit among users and developers alike.

Five years later, and Firefox holds a quarter of the browser market, and while technically not being the most popular (Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still clings to that honor), it’s definitely the most prominent browser, with thousands of plugins (add-ons, they’re called), a busy developer community, and over 330 million users.

As for the future, Christopher Blizzard over at hacks.mozilla.org has some idea about that; it can be summed up in three words: privacy, video, and mobile. From the blog post:

“Over the next five years everyone can expect that the browser should take part in a few new areas – to act as the user agent it should be. Issues around data, privacy and identity loom large. You will see the values of Mozilla’s public benefit mission reflected in our product choices in these areas to make users safer and help them understand what it means to share data with web sites.

Expect to see big changes in the video space. HTML5-based video and open video codecs are starting to appear on the web as web developers make individual choices to support a standards-based, royalty-free approach. Expect to see changes in the expectations around the licensing of codecs.

And over the next five years mobile will play an increasingly important role in our lives, and in the future of the web. The decisions of users, carriers, governments and the people who build phones will have far-reaching effects on this new extension to the Internet and how people will access information for decades to come.”

Mozilla plans to celebrate this milestone by throwing parties (oh no, not that again) around the world. The campaign is called “Light the World with Firefox”, and it will include shining the Firefox logo in cities such as Paris, Tokyo, Rome and San Francisco. Find out more at www.spreadfirefox.com/5years/en-US/.
